“My heart is broken to share that I lost my mother this past weekend,” Carey said on Monday, August 26. “Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister also passed away on the same day.”
The Grammy-winning singer expressed that she felt blessed to have spent time with her mother in the week before her death and requested privacy during this difficult time.
She hasn’t released any further details about the cause of her mother and sister's deaths.
Patricia, who was 8 years old, was a former opera singer and vocal coach of Irish-American descent.
In her 2020 memoir, *The Meaning of Mariah Carey*, the five-time Grammy Award-winning singer described her complicated relationship with her mother, revealing that it caused her “so much pain and confusion.”
Carey, 55, mentioned that competition existed between them. “Professional jealousy comes with the territory of success, but when the person is your mother and the jealousy is revealed at such a tender age, it’s particularly painful,” she said.
However, she also spoke of the deep love she had for her mother. In the book's dedication, she wrote: “To Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I believe did her best. I will love you the best I can, always.”
In a 2022 interview with Gayle King, Carey acknowledged that criticism from her mother during her upbringing had a significant impact on her. She also credited her mother with introducing her to music.
Carey’s relationship with her older sister Alison, who was 63, was similarly complex. In her memoir, Carey wrote that she was not on good terms with her mother and brother Morgan, and said it was “emotionally and physically safer for me to have no contact.”
Alison sued Carey for $1.2 million (£909,780) after the release of the memoir, claiming "immense emotional distress" and calling the book “vindictive.”
Carey’s father, Alfred, passed away from cancer in 2002 at the age of 72.
Regarded as one of the most successful singers globally, Carey’s holiday single “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is the best-selling Christmas song by a female artist of all time. She holds the record for the most Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles by a solo artist with 19 songs, has sold over 220 million records worldwide, and has served as a judge on *American Idol*.
