Men’s basketball continued at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Tuesday, July 30, featuring another exciting lineup of games at Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Lille.
The day began with a clash between two teams still searching for their first victory: Spain and Greece. Spain had lost to Australia in their last game, while Greece narrowly missed a comeback against Canada. Santi Aldama led Spain with a stellar performance, scoring 19 points to help secure an 84-77 victory. Giannis Antetokounmpo also shone for Greece, finishing with 27 points and 11 rebounds.
In contrast, the second game of the day featured a matchup between Canada and Australia, both of whom had won their opening games of the tournament. The Canadians secured a 93-83 victory, powered by a standout performance from RJ Barrett, who led the scoring with 24 points while also contributing seven rebounds and five assists. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander added 16 points, and Josh Giddey had another strong outing with 19 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. Jock Landale chipped in with 16 points as well. Canada’s defense was key, forcing 18 turnovers, including 11 steals.
The most competitive game of the tournament so far saw France narrowly defeat Japan. Neither team managed to build a lead of more than single digits, as they traded momentum throughout the second half. The game’s defining moment came in the final seconds when France's Matthew Strazel converted a four-point play, sending the game into overtime. In the extra period, France pulled away to secure a 94-90 victory. Strazel finished with 17 points, while Victor Wembanyama led the team with 18 points. For Japan, Kawamura Yuki and Rui Hachimura combined for an impressive 53 points.
Germany remains undefeated at Paris 2024 after a solid 86-73 victory over Brazil, fueled by Dennis Schroder's impressive performance of 20 points and six assists. Isaac Bonga contributed 15 points, hitting 3 of 4 from beyond the arc. For Brazil, Yago Santos led the way with 18 points on 7 of 10 shooting, while Vitor Benite added 17 points.
