Lopez filed for divorce on Tuesday in the Los Angeles County Superior Court, according to court documents obtained by the BBC.
The couple, often referred to as "Bennifer," first tied the knot in Las Vegas in July 2022 and held a larger wedding ceremony in Georgia the following month.
Their romance began when they met on the set of the 2003 film Gigli. They had initially planned to marry that year but called it off in early 2004.
Nearly two decades later, they rekindled their relationship.
“Love is beautiful. Love is kind. And it turns out that love is patient. Twenty years patient,” Lopez said in 2022 after announcing their Las Vegas wedding.
The BBC has reached out to their representatives for comment.
Court documents for the case reveal that Jennifer Lopez or her attorney must notify Ben Affleck with a copy of her petition to dissolve their marriage.
Media reports suggest that Lopez, who legally changed her last name to Affleck, has not mentioned any details about a prenuptial agreement in her divorce petition.
A document filed with the LA Superior Court states that both Lopez, 55, and Affleck, 52, are required to disclose their financial information, including current income, expenses, properties, and debts.
The document also notes that they must report any changes to their finances “until a final agreement is reached on all financial issues in your case.”
Lopez has been given 60 days to file her financial disclosure, with Affleck having an additional 60 days after her submission to provide his own.
The filing warns hat failure to report or update financial information could result in court-imposed sanctions.
For months, there has been speculation about their relationship. Reports indicate that they listed their Beverly Hills mansion for $65 million (£50 million), and recent photos show them out separately without their wedding rings.
